This Reuters story via Yahoo reports that a "application programmer" for Vivendi Universal Games sued the company in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday because of overtime pay. The story reports that Neil Aitken, a programmer since February 2000 for VUGames, was paid bimonthly for a 40 hour work week salary, even though he says he and other team members worked more than 12 hours a day. Further, Aitken states that his managers asked him to falsify timesheets to say he had only worked 8 hours a day. The suit is seeking back overtime pay and other damages. A VUGames spokesperson had not responded to inquiries about the suit. |

This PRNewswire press release announces that a new study claims to have found a link between playing video games and obesity. Here is a snip:
In this study, children of foreign nationality living in Switzerland were about twice as likely to be obese as Swiss children. Non-Swiss children watched more television and had less physical activity, suggesting that the disparity in obesity prevalence between Swiss and foreign children may be partially amenable to culturally sensitive interventions. |

This Slitherine Software press release officially announces their next game. Entitled Legion Arena, this Roman Empire themed title is online multiplayer oriented and it will be free to download and play but Slitherine will begin to charge a subscription fee after a few weeks, although they do promise new content (maps, units, playable sides, etc) to be released as well for the paid customers. The game should launch "in a couple of months". Here is a snip:
The player's army starts small...really small! In fact to start with it only includes the player's general character. The player also starts with a small treasury and can choose which units to recruit into their fledgling army. Initially you wont be able to afford too many troops & the higher quality units like Legionaries & Praetorians will be well out of reach. As the player fights and wins battles, their men gain experience & honours. These can be used to buy skills for the squad, ranging from improved weapons handling to the ability to hold a new formation.

This GameSpot story reports that a new memo from game industry analyst PJ McNealy states that Sony may not be able to make its March 2005 launch date for its PSP portable game console. MCNealy says the current lack of a PSP hardware SDK for game developers as well as the need to give the SDK to movie and music companies lead him to believe that Sony may not be able to make its original date. However, Sony PR reps state that the PSP is still on target to be released in Japan late this year and in March 2005 in the US. |

HomeLAN chats with Peter Tamte of Destineer as he talks about their upcoming plans to revamp the classic Close Combat military game franchise, including the upcoming tactical shooter First to Flight. Here is a snip:
HomeLAN - The games are also being developed with the assistance of the US Marine Corps. How are the military branch making their influence known in the game?
Peter Tamte - The Marine Corps is integrally involved in all aspects of development because the Marines will actually be using both games as training simulations. There have already been about 30-40 Marines integrally involved -- from Privates to Colonels. These Marines, who were getting shot at in Afghanistan and Iraq just a few weeks before helping us make the Close Combat games, have contributed exceptional expertise to the products in everything from Marine Corps procedures to what it sounds like to get shot at. HomeLAN chats with Jan Marek of Techland as he talks about Lawman, their upcoming Wild West shooter game. Here is a snip:
HomeLAN - What weapons and items will be used in the game?
Jan Marek - Each character will have a couple of his favorite weapons. We do not plan to overwhelm the player with abundance of weapons and gadgets. Instead we focus on creating classical western weapons of massive power and extremely realistic effects. We can achieve those by using the new system FX's of ChromeEngine 2004. (Read More) |

It's official: I will once again be traveling to Dallas, Texas to attend QuakeCon in mid-August. With the launch of Doom 3 now predicted (at least by retailers) to be around August 3, it should be a lot livelier than the last two or so QuakeCons. It should be fun. Of course, you can expect full coverage of the event at HomeLAN.
Interesting Link of the Day:Ask Peter Jackson about his King Kong remake. My question for Mr. Jackson is, "Why Jack Black? Why? Why? Why?" |

The official UK Far Cry web page has posted up an update on the status of the 1.2 patch for the hit Ubi Soft first person shooter:
Patch 1.2 is in its final stage of production: a nasty scoreboard bug and a CDkey security issue remain to be fixed, but otherwise a huge list of improvement/fixes have been implemented and tested successfully.
Were now localizing all the readme files, and the final candidate will be tested extensively later this week to make sure it is really solid - we dont want to rush in the last few days after such a long development time.
Thanks for your patience,
Matthieu Boulard Far Cry UbiSoft Producer

NCSoft sent over a press release announcing that the first major content update for their fantasy MMORPG Lineage II has been launched on their servers. Here is a snip:
Building on the games player-versus-player focus and the most anticipated feature of Chronicle 1 for current Lineage II fans is the large-scale castle siege. Each server will have five new castles available for conquest, which can be controlled for two weeks. After this time, competitive clans and alliances can prepare themselves for another siege. Several hundred players can take part in the sieges, which feature sword battles, archery attacks, dazzling magic and Siege Golems, huge creatures that can be summoned to knock down castle walls. Once a castle is captured, a player can become the castle lord and hire mercenaries, collect taxes and upgrade the castle against future sieges. |

HomeLAN gets some hands-on impressions of the Nokia N-Gage QD, the upcoming new version of the portable gaming console that also has a phone, PDA, web browser and more. Here is a snip:
Of course, this is supposed to be a game console first and foremost and Nokia sent over a few games along with the QD for us to try out. The QD itself doesnt have any graphical improvements from the original N-Gage so any game made for the original will play on the QD as well. Its a good thing, too, since there are so few games made for the console in the first place. The Nokia published game we received was Ashen, a first person shooter from developer Torus Games. It is, however, awful, with horrible looking graphics and terrible gameplay. The other two games we got to play were from Electronic Arts, the Tiger Woods 2004 golf game and The Sims Bustin Out. Not surprisingly, both of these games are far better. The Sims game has some good graphics and controls and the Tiger Woods title was especially good looking. (Read More) |

HomeLAN reviews the Xbox version of Shadow Ops: Red Mercury, the recent Unreal engine based military shooter from Zombie and Atari. Here is a snip:
This game is not meant as a realistic game like Full Spectrum Warrior tried (and we think failed) to do. Zombies goals were not particularly high but at least they achieved them for the most part; create a game that takes you through a number of locations worldwide, fire a lot of ordinance at your enemies and eventually..well we wont talk about the ending. There isnt a whole lot of innovation here but the presentation of the game, from the level design to the weapons models and more, is solid and entertaining. The Xbox Live multiplayer features are decent but its the single player presentation thats actually at the center of the game here. (Read More) |

I just thought of this as I was reading an article on the Nintendo DS. The upcoming portable console will have Wi-Fi support for some possible online net action but they have also pretty much discouraged online games for the GameCube. All I have to say is, "Huh?"
Interesting Link of the Day:National Treasure trailer. Ummm..this looks sort of silly.. |
